What is a good treat to feed your cats?

Question: What is a good treat to feed your cats?

(Posted by: YYZ on 2008-11-20 23:28:54)

And how much can you feed your cats with treats a day? I feed my cat temptations, is there anything better then that?

My cat loves temptations and she also really likes this brand called "Greenies " Your cat should try them :) I hardly give them to her though, they aren't healthy.

Oh god my cat goes nuts when she hears the treat bag lol. I feed mine the soft Whiskas treats, either crab, tuna, or chicken flavor

I know cats like Temptations - someone gave mine some at Christmas once - but they're really not good for them. Read the ingredients label - it's all fillers and chemicals. I don't really give mine treats but at shows I'll give them the plain chicken baby food - they LOVE that and it's loaded with protein. I've also bought the "Wild Side " freeze dried salmon chunks. Two of mine go nuts for them and the other two could care less. There's nothing in them but salmon. You should try those or the freeze dried chicken or dried bonito flakes. Much better for your cat. Drs. Foster Smith sells at least the chicken and bonito.

Good lord yes. C.E.T. Dental makes two treats that may provide some dental benefit, and they're not full or horrid ingredients: virbacvet.com/ cet/ products/ category/ chews/ If you feed your cat dry food, use canned food as a treat. If you feed it canned, use dry food for treats. That's what I do. Other good treats include raw chicken necks - good for the teeth and jaws. I do this too. Dehydrated meats or organs - you can do your own or buy them at better pet stores. Even bits of raw meat (no pork and nothing spiced). Or cooked meat - again with the no seasonings. The same rules apply to treats as do to foods. You don't want corn, wheat or soy, no carcinogens, and the best possible ingredients. Temptations and Pounce, along with most treats from grocery and pet stores, are utter crap. You can perhaps find some good ones at better pet stores, but you need to read the ingredients. And most important, use treats AS treats. If you offer a very small amount, you could do it on a nightly basis - that's what I got suckered into. My girls get about 10 pieces of good quality kibble as a treat each night, and twice a week they get raw chicken necks. They're also given as rewards after unpleasant things like nail clipping and butt baths. I never do it "just because. "

I was just looking into cat treats the other day and was appalled by the ingredients in just about every one of them! I've decided that my kitties will only get 3 things for treats. First, Wellness makes a treat that is like a turkey "jerky ". It's dried meat cut in little squares. There are several different flavors, but my cats like the turkey. Second is Feline Greenies. Those are not nearly as bad as most treats, and they help clean the teeth a little. Lastly, I "trick " them by feeding their regular dry food (Wellness CORE) from my hand. I put a little in a separate bag and keep it where I keep their other treats, so they don't see me getting out of their normal food container. Works every time lol. I usually give about 8-10 pieces per day for each cat, except for the Greenies because they're about twice the size of the other treats. They only have about 4-5 Greenies each per day. Hope this helps!
