Question: My girls cats are confusing me...any answers?
(Posted by: hillbilly on 2008-11-21 04:38:29)
I got my girl 2 kittens a few weeks after she lost her dog of 13 years and i have never seen kittens act this way.. the female always wants to be on my girls lap, sleeps with her and goes up to lick her cheek or chin (always purring).. the male is affectionate, sleeps with her but what i dont understand is why he tries to bury their dry cat food.. are these normal things for kittens to do? (they are both 14- 15 weeks old) im also paying to get them fixed in the spring... |

Sorry about your girl's dog,it was nice of you to get her the kittens. Yes these are normal things for kittens to do.Long ago when cats were in the wild, they used to bury their food to keep it safe from other animals. It's just an instinct handed down. One of ours still does it and he's 7 years old, yet the other one has never done it. It's lovely having 2 kittens the same age, enjoy them. |

The female sounds just like my kitty when she was a baby. She is very, very affectionate. She loves to be petted and sleeps with me every night. I don't know why the little guy is burying his food. Maybe he doesn't like it? If she's going to try and change their food, don't have her do it all at once. Add one quarter of the new food to three quarters of their old food and gradually transition that way. Overall, it sounds like you did a good job picking out the kitties and she's doing a great job raising them. That was very thoughtful of you to do :) |

Most cats have their own weird little ways. But since you are new to cats I would suggest you buy a very good cat care book. My niece just got her first cat and I got her a "Cat Fancy " magazine subscription and a cat book as gifts. I told her she'd just need one year of the magazine. It covers behaviors, what's good for them, one isn't, etc. I've been fostering cats & their kittens for 8 years now and just when I think I've seen everything, one of them will surprise me with something new. |

Yes, another person on here has the right answer. Your kitten is hiding its food to eat later - he does not know that no-one is going to come along and steal it, so he is just doing what would come naturally to him if he was in the wild. As for the affection, of course its normal - that is why people love cats. |

You should be fortunate that you got such good cats for your daughter. Some times you never know with kittens. This is normal for them, all cats are different with different personalities. And it sounds like you got some good ones! The more affectionate the better. My cats are not affectionate, they are more like terrors but I still love them! You have good ones, don't ever get rid of them because you will regret it! And I'm sorry about your dog :-( |
